In March 2012 satellite operator Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) contracted Boeing Satellite Systems for the built of ABS-2A, based on Boeing’s BSS-702SP bus. After launch the satellite was placed in position 75° E, to provide 48 Ku-band transponders covering the growing markets of Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle-East and India.

ABS-2A was part of a joint order by ABS and satellite operator SATMEX from Mexico (In 2014 acquired by Eutelsat) of four BSS-702SP satellites. The first two satellites, ABS-3A and SatMex-7 (Eutelsat 115 West B) were scheduled to be delivered together in late 2014 or early 2015.

In April 2017, ABS announced 12 transponders of payload is be co-branded as the MongolSat-1 satellite, using its capacity exclusively for launching a free nationwide digital TV-service, telecommunications and broadband services dedicated to the Mongolia market.

ABS-2A satellite was launched in June 14th, 2016 on a Falcon 9 rocket operated by launch operator SpaceX in a dual launch with Eutelsat 117 West B for satellite operator Eutelsat.
