CMS-01 (GSAT-12R) is an Indian communications satellite developed and operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It serves as a replacement for the earlier GSAT-12 satellite, ensuring continuity of vital communication services across India.
The satellite was launched on 17 December 2020 aboard a PSLV-C50 (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota, India. Following launch, CMS-01 was successfully placed into a geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) and later maneuvered into its operational geostationary orbit (GEO).
CMS-01 is based on ISRO’s reliable I-2K satellite bus and is designed for a mission life of approximately 7 years. The satellite carries extended C-band transponders, which are widely used for telecommunications, television broadcasting, VSAT networks, and digital satellite services.
Key features and capabilities include:
The primary objective of CMS-01 is to maintain and strengthen India’s communication infrastructure, especially for rural connectivity, enterprise networks, and government services. It plays an important role in supporting secure and stable satellite communication links across the country.
As part of ISRO’s broader GSAT/CMS satellite fleet, CMS-01 contributes to India’s growing capabilities in space-based communications, helping meet increasing demand for high-quality and reliable connectivity services.
