INSAT-4CR

INSAT-4CR is an Indian communications satellite developed and operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as part of the INSAT-4 series. The satellite was built to restore communication capacityfollowing the earlier loss of INSAT-4C, ensuring continuity of telecom and broadcasting services across India.

The satellite was successfully launched on 2 September 2007 aboard a GSLV-F04 (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota, India. After launch, INSAT-4CR was placed into a Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) and later maneuvered into its operational geostationary orbit (GEO).

INSAT-4CR was based on ISRO’s I-2K satellite bus and carried Ku-band transponders, primarily used for:

  • Direct-to-Home (DTH) television broadcasting
  • Satellite television distribution
  • Telecommunication services

Key features and mission highlights:

  • Designed to replace lost capacity from INSAT-4C
  • Provided reliable Ku-band coverage over the Indian region
  • Supported the rapid growth of DTH and broadcast services in India
  • Demonstrated improved reliability of the GSLV launch vehicle after earlier setbacks

INSAT-4CR played a crucial role in strengthening India’s broadcasting and communication infrastructure, supporting the expanding demand for satellite TV and telecom services.

Overall, the mission marked an important recovery step for ISRO, reinforcing its capabilities in geostationary satellite deployment and communication services.
