MTG-I2, also designated Meteosat-14, is a next-generation European geostationary weather satellite developed under the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) program. The satellite is the second of four MTG Imager (MTG-I) spacecraft designed to provide continuous, high-resolution weather monitoring over Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean and will be operated by EUMETSAT.
The Meteosat Third Generation program is a joint initiative of the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and the European Space Agency (ESA). Once operational, MTG-I2 will significantly enhance Europe’s weather forecasting capabilities by delivering more detailed and more frequent satellite imagery than previous Meteosat generations.
Equipped with the advanced Flexible Combined Imager (FCI), MTG-I2 will capture high-resolution images of Europe every 2.5 minutes, allowing meteorologists to monitor rapidly developing weather systems in near real-time. The satellite will also provide full-disk images of the Earth every 10 minutes, supporting continuous observation of large-scale weather patterns.
The improved imaging performance will help forecasters detect severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, fog, wildfires, dust storms, and other hazardous weather events earlier, improving public safety and supporting emergency response efforts. In addition, MTG-I2 will contribute valuable data for climate monitoring, environmental research, aviation weather services, and numerical weather prediction models.
As part of the Meteosat Third Generation constellation, MTG-I2 (Meteosat-14) represents a major advancement in European meteorological satellite technology, providing faster updates, higher image quality, and enhanced weather forecasting capabilities for the coming decades.
