The German Aerospace Center, officially known as the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), is Germany’s national research center for aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security, and digitalization. Headquartered in Cologne (Köln), Germany, DLR conducts cutting-edge research, develops innovative aerospace technologies, and manages Germany’s national space program through the German Space Agency at DLR

As one of Europe’s leading aerospace organizations, DLR works closely with government agencies, universities, research institutes, and commercial partners worldwide. History of DLR

DLR’s heritage dates back more than 115 years to the founding of Germany’s first aeronautical research organizations in the early 20th century. The organization’s roots can be traced to pioneering aviation research institutions established in 1907 and 1912, making it one of the world’s oldest aerospace research organizations. 

Following several reorganizations, the modern DLR was officially formed in 1997 through the merger of the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) and the German Space Agency (DARA). Today, the organization employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and researchers at numerous research centers throughout Germany.

Major Milestones

Over more than a century of research, DLR has contributed to numerous technological breakthroughs and international space missions.

Early Aviation Research

DLR’s predecessor organizations helped establish many of the aerodynamic principles used in modern aviation, including swept-wing research that influenced the design of high-speed jet aircraft. 

Germany’s First Satellite (AZUR)

One of Germany’s first major space projects was AZUR (625 A-1), launched in 1969. Developed with NASA, AZUR studied cosmic radiation, the Van Allen radiation belts, and Earth’s magnetosphere, marking Germany’s entry into satellite-based space science. 

TerraSAR-X

In 2007, DLR launched TerraSAR-X, one of the world’s most advanced radar imaging satellites.

Operating in the X-band, TerraSAR-X provides:

  • All-weather imaging
  • Day-and-night Earth observation
  • Disaster monitoring
  • Mapping
  • Military reconnaissance
  • Environmental monitoring

The mission was developed in partnership with Airbus Defence and Space.

TanDEM-X

Launched in 2010TanDEM-X flew in close formation with TerraSAR-X to create the first consistent global three-dimensional digital elevation model (DEM) of Earth’s land surface.

The mission became one of the most successful radar mapping projects ever undertaken.

Earth Observation Leadership

DLR has played a major role in European Earth observation programs, supporting missions including:

Germany’s first research satellite.

Symphonie

Germany and France jointly developed the Symphonie communications satellites during the 1970s.

TerraSAR-X

Eu:CROPIS

The Eu:CROPIS satellite investigated biological life-support systems for future Moon and Mars missions by studying plant growth in artificial gravity environments.


EnMAP

Launched in 2022EnMAP (Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program) is Germany’s hyperspectral Earth observation satellite.

Its advanced imaging spectrometer measures hundreds of spectral bands, enabling scientists to monitor:

International Cooperation
