The German Aerospace Center, officially known as the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), is Germany’s national research center for aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security, and digitalization. History of DLR
DLR’s heritage dates back more than 115 years to the founding of Germany’s first aeronautical research organizations in the early 20th century. Following several reorganizations, the modern DLR was officially formed in 1997 through the merger of the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) and the German Space Agency (DARA). Germany’s First Satellite (AZUR)
One of Germany’s first major space projects was AZUR (625 A-1), launched in 1969. Developed with NASA, AZUR studied cosmic radiation, the Van Allen radiation belts, and Earth’s magnetosphere, marking Germany’s entry into satellite-based space science.
TerraSAR-X
In 2007, DLR launched TerraSAR-X, one of the world’s most advanced radar imaging satellites.
