MITEQ offered SATCOM products, such as frequency converter and translator systems, amplifiers, redundant switchover units, equalizer products, uplink power control units, beacon receivers, fiber optic products, video products, Inmarsat products and custom communication equipment. The company also provided RF/microwave assemblies, which include amplifier, converter, multiplexer, receiver, and switch assemblies; levelers; log, limiter, and discriminator products; monopulse detectors; and reflectometers.
In addition, it offered RF/microwave components, such as amplifiers, bias tees, coaxial terminations, converter modules, DC blocks, directional couplers, fiber optic links, hybrid couplers, mixers, modulators, multipliers, phase shifters, PIN diode attenuators and switches, and power dividers and combiners; and frequency discriminators, oscillators, and synthesizers. Further, the company provided spaceborne products, including microwave mixers, logarithmic amplifiers, and custom designed assemblies; and custom solutions. It supplied its products to various military and commercial markets, including satellite and ground-based communication systems; missile guidance; military electronic countermeasures, and radar warning and surveillance systems; land, sea, and airborne radars; air traffic control radars; radio astronomy; and research and development efforts.
The company served customers in the USA and internationally. MITEQ, Inc. was founded in 1969 and was acquired by L3 Communications based in Hauppauge New York. The new organization is operating as L3 Narda Miteq.
Company History
In 1969, MITEQ was founded by seven engineers from Airborne Instruments Laboratory (AIL). Aksel Kiiss (1927-1995) became President/CEO in 1971, bringing a unique combination of character and vision to both the company and the emerging RF/microwave market.
Aksel’s leadership guided Miteq to find its niche in specialty applications, high-performance component technology, and highly complex system and subsystem areas. MITEQ sets itself apart from the competition by using advanced product technology centers, each headed by talented, experienced engineers with years of specific product expertise. These engineers are given the freedom and responsibility for the technical development and operation of their individual product lines. With these philosophies, MITEQ has evolved as a dynamic family, drawing the best talent from around the world.
This unique, entrepreneurial engineering environment allowed for tremendous technological product advancements, setting MITEQ at the forefront of the RF/microwave and SATCOM industry. As news of MITEQ’s capabilities, product advancement, and dependability spread worldwide, Aksel’s pursuit of technical excellence, world-class products, and customer satisfaction established a loyal customer base. These philosophies still exist today, making MITEQ a cornerstone in the RF microwave component and SATCOM industry.
In 2000, MITEQ acquired MCL, Inc, which was located in Bolingbrook, IL, close to Chicago, USA. MCL, Inc. was a leading supplier of high-power amplifiers and at the forefront of developing high-linearity, high-efficiency traveling-wave-tube amplifiers (TWTA’s) for use in satellite uplinks, electronic warfare (EW), electromagnetic- interference (EMI) testing, and other microwave applications. With the addition of MCL, Inc, MITEQ gained leading high-power amplifier technology and a more complete solution for SATCOM customers.
MITEQ’s product lines included low-noise amplifiers (LNA’s), high power amplifiers (HPA’s), mixers, frequency-generation products, intermediate-frequency (IF) products, passive components, fiber-optic transmitters and receivers, and high-reliability products and integrated assemblies, upconverters, downconverters, broadband converters, test-loop translators, redundant switchover units, low-noise block converters (LNB’s), redundant systems, beacon receivers, satellite simulators, fiber-optic products, transceivers and SATCOM high-power and broadband TWTA’s and a range of equipment for INMARSAT applications.
MITEQ’s vertically integrated manufacturing facilities share technology, know-how, and resources. Their facility included the most modern cleanrooms and automation for microcircuit assembly and thin-film circuit production. The technology and products developed by MITEQ’s component groups are used to assemble the most comprehensive ground-based SATCOM, electronic warfare, radar, space, and frequency-translation products in the world.
In July 2013 MITEQ sold its MCL subsidiary to Communications & Power Industries (CPI). MCL would be completely integrated into CPI’s Satcom Division with facilities in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada and Palo Alto, CA, USA.
On January 21st, 2015 L-3 Communications acquired the assets of MITEQ, Inc. for 41 million USD. The business would be combined with L-3’s Narda Microwave-East business located in Hauppauge, N.Y., and the new organization was be called L-3 Narda-MITEQ. Narda Microwave-East is one of the ten original business units of L-3 Communications, a multi-billion dollar electronics company serving the military and commercial communication markets.
Headquartered in New York City, L-3 employs approximately 48,000 people worldwide and is a prime contractor in aerospace systems and national security solutions. L-3 is also a leading provider of a broad range of communication and electronic systems and products used on military and commercial platforms. The company reported 2013 (revised) sales of 12.6 billion USD.
In December 2021 L3Harris Technologies sold of its Narda-Miteq business to an investment affiliate of J.F. Lehman & Company, a leading middle-market private equity firm focused exclusively on the aerospace, defense, maritime, government and environmental sectors.
