Company History
Harmonic was initially incorporated in California in June 1988 as Harmonic Lightwaves, and reincorporated into Delaware in May 1995. Anthony J. Ley became CEO in November 1988. Co-founder Moshe Nazarathy led a research and development center named “Harmonic Data” in Israel starting in 1993, funded in part by the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation.
In May 2000 Harmonic completed the acquisition of DiviCom, a provider of open solutions for digital television, from C-Cube Microsystems, Inc. for 1.7 billion USD.
Harmonic acquired the video networking software business of Entone Technologies, Ltd. in 2006 for about 45 million USD.
Entone’s engineering center in Hong Kong had grown by 3 folds since their VoD business was sold to Harmonic Inc. in 2006.
Entone was established in 1999 by the team that deployed the world’s first commercial IP telco video service. Entone was a leading provider of TV set top boxes in the global digital TV industry. Entone Corporation was acquired by UK based Amino Communications, Ltd, in August 2015.
On July 25th, 2007 Harmonic acquired Rhozet Corporation, a privately held company based in Santa Clara, California. Rhozet offers software-based universal transcoding solutions that facilitate the creation of multi-format video for Internet, mobile and broadcast applications. The addition of Rhozet’s software transcoding technology enabled Harmonic’s existing broadcast, cable, satellite, and telco customers to seamlessly create and deliver high quality Internet and mobile video programming. It is also expected to expand Harmonic’s presence into the online video service provisioning market, where Rhozet’s transcoding solutions are today in use by leading Web video content providers including Amazon.com, MSN and Yahoo!
On November 19th, 2008 Harmonic Inc. announced that it has expanded its global presence with the addition of a new international operations center in Fribourg, Switzerland, which will manage all commercial aspects of Harmonic’s growing business outside of the United States.
On March 12th 2009 Harmonic completed the acquisition of Scopus Video Networks, Ltd. The acquisition strengthened Harmonic’s technology and market leadership, particularly in the broadcast contribution and distribution markets.
On May 6th 2010 Harmonic acquired Omneon Video Networks for an estimated 274 million USD deal. Omneon was founded in May 1998, with investors including Advanced Technology Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, Accel Partners and Invesco. Omneon co-founder Donald M. Craig designed products that won Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards in 1988 and 1996. On December 29th, 2006 Omneon filed for an initial public offering, and tried again several times in 2007 and 2008 after dropping the “Video Networks” from its name, but remained private.
On February 19th, 2013 Harmonic Inc. sold its line of fiber-optic access products to Aurora Networks for a 46 million USD in cash deal. Aurora Networks, Inc, (owned by Pace, Inc.) is a leading supplier for optical access solutions for cable operators.
In March 2016 Harmonic, Inc. completed the acquisition of Thomson Video Networks (TVN), a specialist in advanced video compression solutions. Harmonic announced intentions to acquire TVN in December 2015. Within the combined company, Thomson Video Networks’ France location is to become a strategic Research and Development (R&D) center where it will continue to be a fundamental participant in the technology ecosystem. Together the company’s combined dedicated R&D resources now total more than 600 engineers.
