DirecTV-8 (AT&T-8)

DirecTV-8, later renamed AT&T-8, was a geostationary communications satellite operated by DirecTV and subsequently by AT&T. It was designed to support direct-to-home (DTH) television broadcasting and related digital services for the United States market.

The satellite was built by Boeing Satellite Systems (BSS) on the Boeing 601HP platform and launched on 22 May 2005 aboard an ILS Proton-M / Breeze-M rocket. Operating in the Ku-band, the satellite provided high-power broadcast capacity optimized for consumer satellite TV reception.

The satellite played an important role in expanding and maintaining DirecTV’s U.S. broadcast fleet and later continued service under the AT&T satellite portfolio following corporate restructuring.
