Skybrokers delivered and installed a refurbished ASC Signal 4.9m Satellite Antenna on the Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in northwest Greenland for Tusass.
In February 2024, Tusass (formerly TELE Greenland/Tele Post) requested Skybrokers to deliver an used ASC Signal 4.9m antenna and carry out the installation including the assembly of a 10m radome, on the Pituffik Space Base, the formerly US Military base Thule in northwest Greenland. The Pituffik SB is the northernmost installation of the United States Space Force, located at 76’31’52’N / 68’42’11’W, 947 mile (1,524 km) from the North Pole on the northwest coast of Greenland. Pituffik SB supports Missile Warning, Missile Defense, and Space Surveillance missions using phased array radar systems.
Detailed planning and logistics and various meetings had preceded and the installation of the foundation works for the radome and Earth Station were finished late July. Due to upcoming winter weather conditions, the team had to start installation in August. Construction of the satellite antenna and radome was executed by Skybrokers team of international engineers with great assistance from local helpers. The antenna system was put in service in September 2024. All credits for the construction of the radome go to Mads and Jan from company Semotek in Denmark, and continuous support for foundation and ground works and machinery from Ole and Kim from base management company Vectrus (V2X) / Inussuk.
Tusass is a Greenlandic postal and telecommunications company dating back to 1879. It is the largest telecom company in Greenland and is headquartered in Nuuk. The company manages the top-level domain for Greenland .gl, and owns the sea cable Greenland Connect, a 2-pair 128*10 Gbit/s submarine fiber cable connecting Canada, Greenland and Iceland. Formerly known as TELE Greenland, the company was rebranded in 2021 as Tusass, Greenlandic slang for “talk to you later”.
The company provides internet connections to towns and remote settlements using three different technologies: underwater sea cable, radio chains and via satellite. To improve internet connectivity in the country, Tusass signed in 2021 an agreement with satellite operator HispaSat from Spain for a dedicated payload of 800MHz on the Amazonas Nexus satellite. The payload is designed to provide dedicated coverage to Greenland. The satellite was launched on February 5th, 2023 on a Falcon 9 rocket operated by SpaceX, and the payload for Greenland will be known as Greensat.
