Telkom-4 (Merah Putih) at 108° East

The Telkom-4 (Merah Putih) at 108° East communication satellite was built by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L), based on the SSL 1300 platform and has a lifespan of 16 years, with up to 21 years of fuel remaining. The satellite is replacing the aging Telkom-1 satellite that experienced a major failure in August 2017, causing a service disruption to thousands of ATM’s in Indonesia. The disruption had tremendous repercussions for PT Telkom, whose Telkom-1 services 63 enterprises, and whose subsidiary Telkomsel services 122 million residents of Indonesia.

Telkom-4 satellite carries 60 active transponders consisting of 24 C-Band transponders and 12 Extended C-Band transponders serving the Southeast Asia region, including Indonesia, as well as 24 C-Band transponders which will reach the South Asia region .

The total mass of the satellite is 5,800kgs. Telkom-4 is devoted to serving high-quality television broadcasts (High Definition Television) and GSM and Internet communication services.

Telkom-4 satellite, also known as Merah Putih (red and white, representing the colours of the Indonesian flag), was launched on August 7th, 2018 on a Falcon 9 rocket operated by launch operator SpaceX from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Orlando, Florida, USA.
