The company is headquartered in Sint Niklaas in Belgium, has a production facility in Erpe-Mere, 2 R&D centers in Berlin in Germany and Brest in France and 5 international sales offices in the US, Singapore, China, United Arab Emirates and Brazil.
Company History
Two engineers with a vision founded the company in 1985: Dirk Breynaert and Jean-Marie Maes. Their vision has produced a sitcom pioneering company with over 280 employees in 5 continents, to date. In its first ten years, Newtec worked exclusively on R&D and projects for the European Space Agency. Today, the Company’s excellent relationship with ESA remains and R&D is still very much alive. Some of today’s industry standards in satellite communications have Newtec written all over them, such as Digital Video Broadcasting or DVB, DVB-RCS, ATSC, ABS-S and many other.
In 1994, as the European satcom market was deregulated and opened up, the company realized the opportunity to lever its strong technological know-how and started its own product development strategy. As early as 1996 they began successfully selling DVB satellite communications equipment. Newtec America was founded in 1997, marking the start of the company’s internationalization process. In 2001, Newtec Asia-Pacific was launched in Singapore and since then, offices have opened in China, the Middle-East, South Africa and South America to serve customers around the Globe. Today over 1 billion people around the world receive their TV channels at home thanks to Newtec equipment used in critical satellite based TV distribution chains.
Acquisitions
Newtec also broadened its portfolio through acquisitions:
In 2002 the company acquired Teamtec, a Belgian state-of-the-art production facility for the manufacturing and integration of sitcom equipment. Its central location in Europe guarantees fast worldwide shipment by air and sea.
In 2004 Tellitec, a Berlin-based software company specialized in IP-over-satellite software solutions was added to the Newtec group to further integrate the worlds of sitcom and IP, with a special focus on IP acceleration, data security and network reliability.
In March 2006 Serge van Herck was appointed CEO and Chairman of the Board of the company and replace Dirk Breynaert. Van Herck holds an electrical engineering degree from the University of Ghent and has more than 20 years of experience in the satellite telecommunications industry. Before joining the company Van Herck worked for 7 years as Head of Satellite Services at Belgacom and was a member of the Eutelsat Board of Signatories until 2001.
In 2007 the company acquired TurboConcept, a top French provider of Intellectual Property Cores for turbo and LDPC codes, important building blocks for the DVB-S2 standard. TurboConcept was founded in 1999 as a spin-off from ENST-Bretagne, the French University where turbo codes were born, TurboConcept was a leading provider of IP Cores for advanced FEC techniques – Turbo and LDPC codes. Since February 2008 both TeamTec and Tellitec have been integration into the single legal entity Newtec Cy nv. The integrator of these companies has resulted in significant market recognition, demonstrated in 2009 when the company received the Technology of the Year Award for its FlexACM® solution, by the World Teleport Association. Still a fully private company with Belgian shareholders, Newtec is today a multinational organization with strong European roots.
In 2017 Van Herck was replaced by Thomas Van den Driessche, when Van Herck decided to step down as CEO. Van den Driessche holds a Master’s degree in electronics and marketing from the University of Ghent and has been with Newtec for 11 years and has held various positions. His latest roles include Sales and Business Development Director Europe, VP Market Strategy and Chief Commercial Officer.
In March 2019 Singapore based engineering company ST Engineering acquired Newtec thru its European branch. The acquisition was executed in a 250 million euro cash transaction. ST Engineering, originally set up as a weapons manufacturer, also owns Newtec’s competitor iDirect Technologies that was acquired in 2005.
Newtec has partnerships with ArabSat, Hellas-Sat, YahSat, Panasonic, Liquid Telecom, ESA, Talia, 54th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC54), European Broadcast Union (EBU), ASC Signal (CPI, Inc.), Eutelsat, Airbus Defence & Space, NigComSat, Telekom Austria, C-COM, M7-Group, Speedcast and many more.
