ROSCOSMOS

📌 Establishment & Early History

  • The Russian Space Agency (RSA) was established on 25 February 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, becoming the central executive body for Russia’s space‑programme.
  • In August 2015 it was reorganised into the State Corporation for Space Activities “Roscosmos”.
  • Roscosmos claims the heritage of the Soviet space programme, which produced world firsts such as the first artificial satellite (Sputnik 1) and the first human in space (Yuri Gagarin).

🎯 Key Milestones & Achievements

  • 1990s: Despite economic turmoil, Russia maintained continuity of launches, kept the Mir station operational beyond original lifetime, and became a primary partner in the International Space Station (ISS).
  • 2000: With the launch of Soyuz spacecraft to ISS (31 October 2000) Russia began uninterrupted human presence aboard the station.
  • 2011–2015: Russia introduced new satellite series (Electro‑L weather, Meteor‑M meteorological), advanced navigation constellation GLONASS and started large‑scale structural reforms following reliability concerns.
  • 2020s: Roscosmos confirmed plans to withdraw from the ISS after 2028 and to build its own national orbiting station.

🔭 Future Plans & Strategic Vision

  • Roscosmos intends to launch the core modules of its upcoming Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS) by 2027, with full development by the early 2030s.
  • Robotic lunar exploration remains a priority: the Luna‑Glob programme (Luna 26, 27, 28) is scheduled for launches throughout the late 2020s and early 2030s.
  • The Federal Space Programme 2016–2025 (“FKP‑2025”) set a goal of deploying around 180 new spacecraft and increasing capability in satellite communications, Earth observation, and navigation.

 In Summary

Roscosmos, rooted in the Soviet space legacy and institutionalised in its current form in 2015, remains a major player in global space operations. It has transitioned from being a launch‑provider and ISS partner to steering a future‑focused agenda: building a national orbiting station, returning to the Moon, expanding its satellite constellations, and modernising its launch systems.
