Express-AM4 (Ekspress-AM4)

Express-AM4 (Ekspress-AM4) was a Russian geostationary communications satellite built by ISS Reshetnev in partnership with Thales Alenia Space for the national operator RSCC (Russian Satellite Communications Company). Designed to provide direct-to-home TV broadcasting, broadband internet, data transmission, and VSAT services, it was one of the most powerful satellites in Russia’s Express fleet at the time.

The satellite was launched on 18 August 2011 aboard a Proton-M / Breeze-M rocket. Shortly after launch, the Breeze-M upper stage failed to place Express-AM4 into its intended geostationary transfer orbit, resulting in the loss of the mission. Despite never becoming operational, Express-AM4 played an important role in shaping follow-on missions, including the successful Express-AM4R replacement satellite.

Express-AM4 was designed to operate in C-, Ku-, and L-bands, targeting coverage of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Asia-Pacific regions.
