Satellite operator SKY Perfect JSAT ordered the JCSAT-9 high-power hybrid satellite in 2003. The spacecraft was constructed by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems (LMCSS) and is based on the award winning A2100AXS platform. JSAT-9 is located at 132° East longitude and has a lifespan of a minimum of 12 years. The satellite carries C-, Ku- and S-band transponders.
The satellite, designated JCSAT-9, provides satellite communications services throughout Asia and Japan following its scheduled launch in 2005. After commencing services, satellite operator SKY Perfect JSAT renamed in JCSAT-5a.
Japanese mobile phone operator, NTT-DoCoMo, operates the S-band payload and a part of the C-band payload as N-Star d to replace the N-Star a satellite.
JCSAT-5a was successfully launched on April 12th, 2006 with a Zenit 3SL from the Odyssey launch platform operated by launch operator Sea Launch.
