In June 2015 satellite operator Broadcasting Satellite System Corp. from Japan (B-SAT) ordered BSat-4a broadcasting satellite with Space Systems/Loral (SS/L). The satellite would be used for Direct-to-Home (DTH) television services in Japan.

BSAT-4a has 24 Ku-band transponders and will expand the availability of advanced television services such as high definition and 4K/8K ultra high-definition television. BSAT-4a is based on the highly reliable SSL-1300 platform, which provides high-power and the flexibility to support a broad range of applications and technology advances. The satellite is designed to provide service for 15 years or more.

A second satellite, BSat-4b was ordered with SS/L in March 2018 with a planned launch in 2020.

BSat-4a was successfully launched on September 29th, 2017 in a dual launch with IS-37e satellite for satellite operator Intelsat, on an Ariane 5ECA launch vehicle, operated by launch operator Arianespace.
