Chinasat-20A (Shen Tong 1B, ST-1B, ZX-20A, FH-1A)

The ChinaSat-20A (ZX-20A / Shentong-1B / ST-1B / FH-1A)
is a Chinese military communications satellite operated by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), forming part of China’s secure space-based communications infrastructure.

The satellite was developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). It is believed to be based on a DFH-series geostationary satellite platform, optimized for high-power, secure, and resilient communications in geostationary orbit (GEO).

ChinaSat-20A was launched on 24 November 2019 aboard a Long March 3A (CZ-3A) rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center. Following launch, it was positioned in GEO to provide continuous coverage over China and surrounding strategic regions.

Unlike civilian ChinaSat satellites, ChinaSat-20A is part of the Shentong (Shen Tong) military communications satellite network, which supports the PLA’s need for secure, encrypted, and high-reliability communications. Its payload is believed to include multi-band transponders (likely C-, Ku-, and Ka-band) with anti-jamming and protected communication capabilities, although exact specifications remain classified.

Key milestones include its role in modernizing China’s military satellite communications architecture, replacing or augmenting earlier Shentong satellites and improving bandwidth, coverage, and resilience for defense operations.

The primary users are PLA military branches, command-and-control networks, and government defense entities, supporting applications such as:

  • Secure voice and data communications
  • Strategic command and control
  • Military network connectivity
  • Possibly support for mobile and deployed units

Looking ahead, ChinaSat-20A represents part of a broader effort by China to expand and harden its space-based military communications constellation, integrating with other systems such as Tianlian data relay satellites and Beidou navigation, enabling more network-centric and globally connected military operations.
