Superbird-4 (Superbird-B2) Communications Satellite Overview
Superbird-4, also known as Superbird-B2, is a Japanese geostationary communications satellite operated by SKY Perfect JSAT Group. Originally built for the Space Communications Corporation (SCC), the satellite became part of the JSAT fleet following the merger between SCC and JSAT Corporation in October 2008.
Superbird-4 was constructed by Hughes Space and Communications in Los Angeles, California, and is based on the HS-601HP satellite platform, known for its high-performance and extended payload capabilities. The satellite carries 35 transponders to support a wide range of telecommunications services across Japan.
Superbird-4 was successfully launched on February 18, 2000, at 01:04 UTC aboard an Ariane 44LP H10-3 rocket. The launch was conducted by Arianespace from ELA-2 at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. After on-orbit testing, the satellite was placed in its designated geostationary orbital slot at 162° East longitude.
From its position at 162° East, Superbird-B2 provides telecommunications services across Japan, supporting data, broadcast, and emergency communication infrastructure. Notably, it broadcasts Japan’s J-Alert emergency warning system, which is used for delivering critical alerts to the public in case of natural disasters or national emergencies.
SKY Perfect JSAT Group is Japan’s leading satellite operator and one of Asia’s largest, offering satellite broadcasting and communications services. The merger of Space Communications Corporation (SCC) with JSAT in 2008 consolidated Japan’s satellite communication capabilities under a single entity, enhancing service reliability and coverage.
Superbird-4 (Superbird-B2) continues to play a critical role in Japan’s satellite communications network, offering both commercial and emergency broadcast services. Its reliable performance and strategic position have made it an important asset in SKY Perfect JSAT’s fleet.
