Aerospacelab
Aerospacelab is a New Space privately held start-up company manufacturing and operating LEO satellites for Earth Observation (EO), Telecommunications and high-performance satellite platforms, from 50 kg to 1,000 kg, for space agencies, Defense organizations and agriculture and physics companies.
The company is headquartered in Mont-Saint-Guibert, close to Brussels in Belgium and employs more than 180 full-time employees. It will open the third largest factory for satellite assembly in Charleroi in 2025 which will have a capacity of 500 units per year and will employ as many as 400 people.
Aerospacelab was established in 2018 in Louvain-le-Neuve and has grown significantly since its inception and aims to be the European leader in geospatial intelligence and small satellite platforms. Leveraging investments are made for the company’s own constellation’s deployment of 40 Micro-satellites each weighing 150kgs.
Company History
Aerospacelab was founded in 2018 by Benoît Deper (CEO). Prior to founding the company, Deper worked as a Research Associate at the IMD Business School in Switzerland and held positions as Lead Engineer and CTO of Swiss Space Systems.
In February 2022 the company raised 45.5 million USD in a Series B funding round, led by Airbus Ventures and XAnge, a European venture capital firm based in Paris and Munich. This brings Aerospacelab’s total funding to 68 million USDsince it was founded in 2018, include BNP Paribas Private Equity, Sambrinvest, a Belgian venture capital firm, and SRIW, the investment arm of Belgium’s Wallonia region.
On March 19th, 2024 Aerospacelab announced a new partnership with startup Xona Space Systems from USA. to build the first positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) satellite. Xona’s satellite will be manufactured at Aerospacelab’s planned future facility in the USA. Xona Space is developing a commercial PNT-service through a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites. The company plans to offer the service as a backup to PNT provided by the Global Positioning System.
