LAOSat

Lao Asia Pacific Satellite Co, Ltd. (LAOSat) is the only satellite operator in Lao PDR (Laos). The company is fully responsible for the commercial operation of LAOSat-1 satellite, located at 128.5° East, and is mainly engaged in Satellite Telecommunications, Satellite Television and WBCN services. The satellite is designed to provide communication links for government work, television transmissions and a range of telecommunication applications in Laos. LAOSat was incorporated on February 25th, 2016 and is headquartered in Vientiane, Laos.

The LAOSat-1 satellite will improve Lao telecommunication infrastructure, construct the nationwide broadcasting television include 130 programs uplink service, satellite broadcasting television, VAST communication and international data transmission for Laos and surrounding countries.

The satellite will also be used for other purposes, including education, health, defense and security. LAOSat-1 was developed through a venture between the Lao government and three Chinese developers, APMT, SSTC and APST.

The satellite is based on the DFH-3B platform built by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), representing an improved version of the second generation of DFH bus systems. DFH-3 was first launched in 1994 followed by the inauguration of the DFH-A improvement in 2007. LAOSat-1 is the first known satellite based on DFH-3B to be launched into orbit.


Company History

On August 22nd, 2008, the Chinese and Lao governments signed a Framework Agreement on Space Science and Technical Cooperation.

One year later, on September 25th, 2009, China APMT and the National Authority for Science and Technology (NAST) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Lao Satellite Project.

A shareholders’ agreement for the LAOSat-1 Joint Venture Company was signed in Vientiane on October 30th. The Lao government holds a 45% stake, Chinese APMT has a 35% stake, Chinese SSTC 15% stake and Chinese APST 5% stake in the Joint Venture Company.

The Contract for Lao Satellite Broadcasting Telecommunication System Construction Project was signed by China APMT, China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) and the Lao National Authority for Science and Technology on February 25th, 2010. The contract valued 259 million USD, and was financed by Export-Import Bank of China.

The project completed its Critical Design Review in 2013 and entered construction in 2014 with an overall goal of putting the satellite to operation by December 2nd, 2015 to broadcast the 40th Independence Anniversary festivities.

On November 20th, 2015 launch operator CGWIC from China successfully orbited the LAOSat-1 spacecraft on a Long March 3B/E rocket.
