Tomorrow.io

Tomorrow.io, formerly known as ClimaCell, stands at the forefront of weather intelligence and climate adaptation platforms worldwide. This American weather technology company specializes in providing real-time weather forecasting services. Initially, their focus was on utilizing wireless communication infrastructure and IoT devices to gather real-time weather data, with the aim of reporting conditions with greater proximity to the ground than satellite observations and at a higher resolution than Doppler weather radar techniques.

Under the banner of Operation Tomorrow Space, the company is launching weather radar satellites to enhance forecasting accuracy and coverage. The inaugural satellite, Tomorrow-R1, was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket in April 2023 as part of the Transporter-7 rideshare mission. Operating in the Ka-band, this system effectively detects precipitation and ocean surface characteristics. The company’s ambitious plan includes the launch of 20 satellites equipped with a combination of active radar and passive microwave sensors.

Tomorrow.io serves as a trusted partner for leading companies such as JetBlue, Fox Sports, The United States Air Force, Ford, and Uber Technologies to predict the impact of weather events. With Tomorrow.io’s innovative early warning systems and actionable insights, organizations can anticipate impacts, mitigate risks, and ensure operational resilience.

Company History

Tomorrow.io was founded in 2016 as ClimaCell in Israel by three students, Shimon Elkabetz (CEO), Itai Zlotnik and Rei Goffer, with the goal to develop a real-time weather forecasting service based on cellular and IoT monitoring systems. Elkabetz served in the Israeli Air Force for 11 years in several managerial and commanding positions.

In February 2021, ClimaCell announced Operation Tomorrow Space. The company hoped to broaden its business model by launching proprietary radar satellites to improve its forecasting abilities. In March of that year, it announced that it had raised 77 million USD in a series D round of funding. Alongside the investment, ClimaCell changed its name to Tomorrow.io to reflect the new direction.

On April 14th, 2023 the company launched its first satellite, the Tomorrow-R1 with the Transporter-7 Rideshare Mission on a Falcon 9 rocket operated by SpaceX. Tomorrow-R1 was put in operation in May and marks the first step in deploying the Tomorrow.io constellation of active and passive sensors, which will achieve breakthroughs in global weather forecasting and climate observation, near real-time scans of precipitation and atmospheric profiles for any point on Earth.

In June 2023 the company raised 87 million USD in Series E funding. The funding will be used to complete their satellite constellation of more than 20 satellites over the two forthcoming years. The Series E funding was led by Activate Capital, and included participation from RTX Ventures, Seraphim Space and Chemonics. Existing Tomorrow.io investors, SquarePeg Capital, Canaan, ClearVision, JetBlue Ventures and Pitango, also took part in the round.

On June 12th, 2023 the company launched its second satellite, Tomorrow-R2, with the Transporter-8 RideShare mission on a Falcon 9 rocket operated by SpaceX.
