E2v operates as a separate division of Teledyne Technologies, Inc. and is a global manufacturer that designs, develops and manufactures technology systems and components in healthcare, life sciences, space, transportation, defense and security and industrial markets. The company is headquartered in the UK and was previously known as English Electric Valve Company (EEV, Ltd.) and for short time Marconi Applied technologies, a division of the Marconi Group.



History

The company began in the early 1940’s as a part of the Marconi group, manufacturing magnetrons for defense radar systems. The company was first registered as a separate private company in Chelmsford, Essex, UK in 1947 under Semyon Aisenstein. Its initial name was the Phoenix Dynamo Co. Ltd, but changed its name to English Electric Valve Company Ltd. quickly as a private company spun-off the large English Electric Company to hold a valve/tube business it had acquired. This meant that the brand appeared suddenly in the market, where it was very successful and had become the largest hi-tech manufacturing company in the UK by 1959. A year later they won an EMMY award for outstanding contribution to Electronics Technology in developing the 4½’ orthicon tube.

In 1960 the transistor production was merged into the joint venture Associated Transistors (AT) formed with Automatic Telephone & Electric Co. and Ericsson Telephones to manufacture transistors in greater quantities. AT was in 1961 acquired by Mullard Radio Valve Co. Ltd, a British manufacturer of electronic components, based in London.

The English Electric Valve Co. continued to thrive and still existed as E2V Technologies. In 1962, EEV opened its first office in Buffalo, NY, USA and also, in 1972, they opened an office in Paris, France. The company had received 13 Queen's Awards for Technology in its history and most recently in 2006 for low light imaging devices and in 2004 for thyratrons for cancer radiotherapy treatment.

In 1969 the formation of GEC Electronic Tubes was announced to bring together Marconi-Osram Valve Company (formed in 1920 and later renamed M-O Valve Co.), a company owned jointly by General Electric Co. (GEC) and Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co. The company took over GEC's valve factory and had half of the UK valve production and became the largest specialized valve manufacturer outside USA since 1919.

In 1988 English Electric Valve Co. officially changed its name to EEV, Ltd. and in 1999, when Keith Attwood was CEO from 1999 to 2013, led the company through a short period as Marconi Applied technologies.

Later on, in 2002, the company was renamed to E2V Technologies, Ltd. as part of a 89 million USD management buy out supported by Venture Capital firm 3i following the collapse of the Marconi group including the Microwave division. Following further growth under 3i, the company floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2004.



Acquisitions

In 2005 E2V acquired Gresham Scientific Instruments and renamed in E2V Scientific Instruments and sold it again in 2012 to SGX Sensortech. In 2006 the company purchased the Amtel production facility in Grenoble, France facility from the US based Atmel Corporation and renamed in E2V Semiconductors. Atmel Corporation is still a worldwide leader in the design and manufacturing of microcontrollers, capacitive touch solutions, advanced logic, mixed-signal, nonvolatile memory and radio frequency (RF) components.

Also in 2006 the company acquired Swiss based MiCs MicroChemical Systems and renamed in E2V Microsystems and sold this company again to SGX Sensortech in 2012.

In October 2008 E2V acquired QP Semiconductor, a US-based designer and manufacturer of speciality semiconductor components used in military and aerospace applications, establishing E2V’s first US manufacturing base.

In 2014 the E2V Stellar satelite uplink product range was acquired by SpacePath company that was formed for this purchase by Colin Bolton and Newton Burnet as a Joint Venture with Polarity, Inc, a power systems design and manufacturing company based in Rancho Cordova, California, USA.

Also in 2014 E2V acquired Spain based Innovaciones Microelectronicas SL, trading under the name AnaFocus, a designer and manufacturer of standard off-the-shelf and customized high-performance, high-quality CMOS image-sensors and vision-sensors for the industrial, professional, scientific, medical and high-end surveillance markets.

In 2016 US based industrial conglomerate Teledyne Technologies, Inc. announced the acquisition of E2V Technologies for 789 million USD. The acquisition was completed on 28 March 2017. The company will trade as Teledyne E2V as a separate group under the Teledyne Technologies, Inc. umbrella. Under the same umbrella also satellite equipment manufacturer Paradise Datacom is operating as Teledyne Paradise Datacom.
