KazSat-2 satellite was the second communications satellite for JSC KazSat on behalf of the Kazakh Space Agency Kazcosmos from Kazachstan. The satellite was ordered in 2006 and constructed by Krunichev Center for the Spacecraft and Thales Alenia Space for the Payload. Thales Alenia Space is also the provider of KazSat-1 and KazSat-3 payloads.
KazSat-2 features 12 Ku-band transponders for fixed communications and 4 Ku-band transponders for TV-transmissions and is intended for telecast, fixed satellite communication and data transmission for Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The satellite was originally to supplement the KazSat-1 satellite, but serves now to replace Kazsat-1 due to the complete loss of the first satellite in 2008.
The satellite was originally scheduled for launch in 2009 but was delayed and finally launched on July 16th, 2011 on a Proton M carrier rocket operated by launch operator ILS from Cosmodrome Baikonur launch site in Kazakhstan.
