Company History

Andrew Hatfield started Avcom in 1973 with an initial focus on rebuilding militaty aviation headsets for use in general aviation. The company expanded into the satellite TV market, offering a series of the first affordable direct broadcast satellite TV receivers.

Avcom, Inc. was incorporated in 1976 as a private company and was initially providing the Satcom industry with their PSR-3 Satellite Receiver. This product differentiated itself from the competition with its unique “Scan-Tune” functionality which allowed the receiver to be tuned back and forth across all transponders once every 3 seconds. Avcom continued to develop and produce a variety of receivers and satellite accessories throughout the early 1980’s.

In the 1980’s, when TV networks began scrambling their signals and satellite receiver sales declined, Andy’s response was to expand into the test equipment market with the introduction of the model PSA-35A, a low-cost easy to use portable Spectrum Analyzer. A field technician could now make precision satellite antenna alignments easily and quickly on site. Avcom’s technology in their Spectrum Analyzers were patented in 1988 and 1989.

It’s Scan-Tune functionality developed for the satellite receiver industry that set the stage for the first Avcom spectrum analyzer product. In 1985, Avcom developed a cost-effective spectrum analyzer modeled after their high-end competitors, but without the extreme performance and much more affordable.

The PSA-35 Spectrum Analyzer was introduced to the market at the 1986 NAB Satellite Show in Las Vegas. Since then, Avcom, Inc. has continued to expand their product portfolio with remote, rack-mounted and portable spectrum analyzer solutions.

Today, Avcom, Inc. is a respective manufacturer of low-costs quality portable and remote Spectrum Analyzers that are deployed worldwide.
