DirecTV-4S: High-Powered Ku-Band Satellite for Expanded Local Broadcasting
In December 1999, DirecTV, Inc. placed an order for DirecTV-4S, a high-performance Boeing BSS-601HP communications satellite—the fifth Boeing-built satellite for the company. The satellite was successfully launched aboard an Ariane-44LP H10-3 rocket on November 27, 2001, and officially entered service on December 27, 2001.
Advanced Spot Beam Technology for Local Channel Expansion
DirecTV-4S marked a milestone as the first satellite in the DirecTV fleet to utilize spot beam technology. This focused beam capability enables localized signal delivery, allowing DirecTV to significantly expand local channel offerings in key metropolitan areas across the United States. The satellite also enhances in-orbit redundancy, improving the overall reliability of DirecTV’s broadcast services.
Payload and Frequency Band
Operating in the Ku-band, the satellite features dual payloads:
Spot Beam Payload: Designed for local channel delivery, it includes 38 Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTAs) with mixed output power ratings of 30W, 45W, 65W, and 88W.
National Beam Payload: Supports broader coverage with two active transponders, plus capacity for two additional high-power and six low-power transponders.
This configuration allows DirecTV-4S to deliver both localized and nationwide broadcasting services, enhancing flexibility in satellite TV distribution.
