From its location in geostationary orbit at 174° East, the Eutelsat 174A satellite offers coverage over the Asia Pacific region via a payload of Ku-band transponders accessing interconnecting beams.

Leveraging its comprehensive coverage and high-bandwidth capability, Eutelsat 174A offers a broad range of telecom and maritime services, with coverage from Australia and New Zealand to Japan, including Asian seas and the Pacific ocean.

Eutelsat 174A was originally ordered as AMC-23 by GE-Americom and constructed by Alcatel Alenia Space (Thales Alenia Space) based on their Spacebus-4000C3 platform. In 2007 the satellite was spun-off from SES Americom to SAT-GE, when General Electric split off from satellite operator SES. After this transaction, the satellite was renamed GE 23. Eutelsat acquired the satellite in June 2012 the and renamed to Eutelsat 172A to expand Eutelsat’s coverage to Asia-Pacific region and West Coast of the USA.

Eutelsat 172A was launched on December 29th 2005 on a Proton M rocket operated by launch operator ILS. The satellite had at that time an estimated lifespan of 8.5 years.

The satellite previously operated at 172° East under the brand name Eutelsat 172A and was moved to 174° East when Eutelsat replaced the 172° East slot with Eutelsat 172B in 2017.
