Express-AM11 (Ekspress-AM11)

Express-AM11 (Ekspress-AM11) was a Russian geostationary communications satellite operated by RSCC (Russian Satellite Communications Company). It was built by ISS Reshetnev in cooperation with Alcatel Space as part of Russia’s Express-AM satellite series.

Launched on 26 April 2004 aboard a ILS Proton-K / DM-2 rocket, Express-AM11 was designed to provide television broadcasting, radio, data transmission, and VSAT services. The satellite carried C-band and Ku-band transponders, delivering coverage over Russia, Eastern Europe, and parts of Asia.

Express-AM11 contributed to the modernization and expansion of Russia’s national satellite communications network in the mid-2000s, supporting both commercial and governmental connectivity needs.

However, in March 2006 Ekspress-AM11 was hit by either a micrometeorite or a piece of space debris, which lead to instantaneous depressurization of the thermal control system fluid circuit, followed by a sudden outburst of the heat-carrying agent. This resulted in a significant disturbing moment generation followed by the spacecraft orientation loss and rotation. After regaining control, the satellite was put into a graveyard orbit.
