Nimiq 2 (Telesat DTH-2)

Nimiq 2, also known as Telesat DTH-2, is a Canadian geostationary communications satellite operated by Telesat. It was designed primarily to support direct-to-home (DTH) television broadcasting services across Canada and the United States, strengthening capacity for digital TV distribution.

The satellite was built by Boeing Satellite Systems (BSS) on the Boeing 601HP platform and launched on 29 December 2002 aboard an ILS Proton K rocket. The satellite operates in Ku-band, providing high-power coverage optimized for small consumer satellite dishes.

In February 2003 Nimiq 2 experienced a malfunction that affected the available power on the spacecraft. That time, the satellite generating sufficient power to operate only 26 of the 32 transponders.

Nimiq 2 became a key element of Canada’s DTH satellite infrastructure, enabling reliable nationwide broadcast services and supporting the long-term growth of satellite television in North America.
