SES-16/GovSat-1 at 21.5° East is a multi-mission satellite using dedicated military frequencies (X-band and military Ka-band) to provide high-powered and fully steerable spot beams for multiple government-specific missions. The satellite will cover Europe, the Middle-East and Africa. The Luxembourg government has pre-committed to a significant amount of capacity on the new satellite in support of its NATO obligations; the remaining capacity will be made available to governmental and institutional customers.
SES 16 / GovSat provides exclusive bandwidth for government and defense users through dedicated military frequencies in the X- and Ka-Bands. The satellite employs high-powered, steerable spot beams and wide-area coverage to support a range of secure communications, high-throughput, and mobility operations. Its coverage spans the EMA region, and includes extensive maritime areas over the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas, as well as the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
The X-Band payload offers a global beam covering from 50°W to 90°E and 70°N to 70°S, facilitating secure communications compliant with NATO’s Level of Ambition for a Major Joint Operation. Additionally, multiple-mission beams, which are fully steerable, provide focused coverage on critical mission areas, ensuring secure and reliable communications for localized operations.
SES-16/GovSat-1 satellite was ordered by LuxGovSat, a new joint venture between Satellite Operator SES and the Luxembourg government, from the satellite manufacturer Orbital ATK (Northrop Grumman) , The satellite is positioned at 21.5° East and was launched on January 31st, 2018 on an Falcon 9 booster, operated by launch operator SpaceX.
