COMSATBw-2 is a secure, geostationary military communications satellite positioned at 34° West longitude, operated by MilSat Services GmbH on behalf of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). It is part of the SATCOMBw satellite communications system, Germany’s first fully owned and operated military satellite communications infrastructure.
The SATCOMBw system is designed to provide secure, reliable, and global satellite-based communication servicesfor the Bundeswehr. It supports mission-critical connectivity for military authorities, government bodies, and armed forces deployed from the Americas to Eastern Asia. The satellite enables various services including:
Encrypted voice communication
Video and multimedia transmission
Fax and database access
Internet and mobile command support
COMSATBw-1 and COMSATBw-2 form the core of this multi-mission architecture, which is essential for Germany’s strategic defense communication operations.
Satellite control is carried out by the German Space Operations Center (GSOC), operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The primary ground stations are located at the Weilheim Ground Station Complex in southern Germany, ensuring high-security standards and continuous operational monitoring.
The SATCOMBw program (Satellitenkommunikation der Bundeswehr) was initiated to provide the German military with autonomous and resilient satellite communications, eliminating dependence on foreign systems. The system entered service in 2008, with Stage 2 becoming fully operational by the end of 2011.
The satellite system is operated and maintained by Airbus Defence and Space, under contract with the German Federal Ministry of Defence. In 2022, the German Bundestag’s Budget Committee approved an extension of the SATCOMBw operational contract with Airbus through 2028, securing long-term continuity with an investment of €25 million.
MilSat Services GmbH is a joint venture between Airbus Defence and Space and ND SatCom, responsible for providing satellite communication services for the Bundeswehr. The company plays a key role in managing military SATCOM systems, enabling secure data links between mobile command posts, naval units, and military aircraft.
