Amazonas-1 (Hispasat 55W-1)

Amazonas-1 (Hispasat 55W-1)
was a geostationary communications satellite operated by Hispasat from Spain to expand telecommunications coverage across South America, Central America, and parts of North America.

Launched in 2004 aboard a ILS Proton-M Briz rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazachstan, Amazonas-1 was positioned at 55° West longitude. The satellite was built by Astrium (now Airbus) on the Eurostar 3000 platform.

Amazonas-1 was equipped with Ku-band transponders, enabling a wide range of services including direct-to-home (DTH) television broadcasting, VSAT networks, broadband connectivity, and corporate communications. It played a key role in supporting the rapid growth of digital TV and telecom infrastructure in Latin America during the 2000’s.

Designed for a 15-year mission life, Amazonas-1 formed the foundation of Hispasat’s Amazonas satellite fleet and helped establish the company as a major satellite operator in the Americas. The satellite reached its EOL in June 2017 and was moved to a graveyard orbit.
