Hiber: Revolutionizing IoT with Next-Generation Satellite Technology

Hiber was a start-up in satellite-powered IoT connectivity, providing cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions for businesses operating in remote locations. The company was founded in 2016 as Magnitude Space and has since evolved into an industry pioneer in low-power IoT connectivity via HiberHilo, which provides IoT remote sensor products and software for the energy industry.

The Evolution of Hiber: From Satellites to End-to-End IoT Solutions

Initially focused on developing affordable satellite IoT solutions, the company expanded its business model in 2020, partnering with Inmarsat to deliver end-to-end remote monitoring solutions for industries needing mission-critical data from remote locations.

In 2021, the company partnered with WTS Energy to tackle challenges in the energy sector, leading to the development of HiberHilo, a satellite-enabled well monitoring system.

On June 7th, 2023 the company filed for Chapter 11 after the failed acquisition of Swiss Astrocast, lack of cash and technical problems with two of the four satellites. End of June 2023 Hiber restarts following the company’s acquisition by FC Space, a subsidiary of Finch Capital. The acquisition led to Hiber’s renewed focus on HiberHilo, which provides IoT remote sensor products and software for the energy industry.

Hiber Satellites: Expanding Global IoT Coverage

Hiber’s First Satellites: Hiber-1 & Hiber-2

On November 29th, 2018, the company launched Hiber-1, its first Nano-Satellite, from India’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre aboard a PSLV rocket, operated by ISRO. Shortly after, Hiber-2 was launched via SpaceX’s Falcon 9 during the SSO-A RideShare mission.

These 6U CubeSats provided global IoT connectivity, addressing the challenge that 90% of the planet lacks affordable IoT networks. Unlike power-hungry and costly traditional satellites, the company’s solution is up to 20 times cheaper, making IoT applications in agriculture, climate monitoring, and remote industries economically viable.

Second-Generation Hiber Satellites: Hiber-3 & Hiber-4

To enhance coverage, the company introduced Hiber-3 and Hiber-4, 3U CubeSats launched in 2021 aboard a Soyuz-2-1a Fregat, operated by GK Launch Services, and the SpaceX’ Falcon 9 launcher on their Transporter-1 RideShare Mission. These smaller, more efficient satellites aimed to expand Hiber’s IoT connectivity network.

How Hiber’s Satellite IoT Network Works

HiberHilo: Remote Monitoring for the Energy Industry

One of the company’s most successful innovations, HiberHilo, enables real-time well integrity monitoring for the oil & gas industry. Using satellite IoT technology, energy companies can monitor remote wells without needing on-site inspections, improving safety, efficiency, and environmental protection.

🚀 “Satellite-enabled well monitoring is a key solution for keeping existing wells environmentally safe. What you measure, improves!”
— Frederik Rengers, CEO, WTS Energy

Due to its success, HiberHilo became a standalone company in 2023, following the Hiber’s acquisition by FC Space (a subsidiary of Finch Capital).

The Future of Hiber: Driving IoT Innovation in the Energy Sector

With strong financial backing from Finch Capital, the company is focused on delivering scalable, cost-effective IoT solutions for the energy industry.
